Seeing Things Clearly
How Valley Pivots are Helping a Global Carrot Powerhouse
Myths and modern science both tell us that eating
carrots helps support healthy vision. The carrots grown by Bolthouse
Farms, one of the largest carrot operations in the world, are also
helping California producers sharpen their vision in other ways. Since
Bolthouse has switched to Valley center pivots to irrigate their carrot
acres, which comprise more than 70% of their overall crop production,
they’ve seen noticeable differences in crop uniformity, decreases in
input costs and reduced labor needs. Their example is helping other
California growers see a future that includes less water usage, better
crop quality and most of all, increased profitability.

University of California - Conservation Tillage and Center Pivots
Two overhead irrigation studies are currently underway at the West Side
Research and Extension Center. One has compared a wheat/corn rotation
under overhead irrigation with a conventional, surface irrigation
scheme. UC Davis researcher, Jeff Mitchell, reported using 65 percent
less water than furrow irrigation but resulted in similar wheat yields. (Excerpt from "A new production model for the San Joaquin Valley"

Valley Center Pivot and Linear Sprinklers
Many California growers are wondering more
and more just what could a center pivot do for them? They've been
showing up more and more in California. Major vegetable producers as
well as row crop farmers have converted many fields. The water and
labor savings have been documented.
